The Supreme Court of Pakistan has expressed dissatisfaction over police report on Shahzeb Khan murder case, giving law enforcement agencies the January 10 deadline to arrest Shahrukh Jatoi.

A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary resumed hearing of the suo motu notice taken by him over the cold-blooded murder.

During the hearing DIG South Shahid Hayat said that according to the records the main accused in the case Shahrukh Jatoi had traveled to the UAE under a different name and adding that the information of Shahrukh arrival in UAE was conveyed by the counsel general of Dubai.

He also said that it is a common mal practice under which people traveled using someone else’s name. “Interpol was contacted for the arrest of the accused”, said Shahid Hayat.

In his remarks, the chief justice said that IG Sindh and DIG South should have been suspended instead the sub-inspector was suspended over the murder. Moreover, Chief Justice Iftikhar said an attempt was also made to quash the case by registering a second FIR.

He said that the police had let go of the suspect as even Inspector General (IG) Police Sindh Fayyaz Laghari knew he was from an influential family. But, one should only be afraid of God and not of any influential people, he advised.

According to a news report, a team comprising of police officials is leaving for Dubai from Karachi today to arrest Shahzeb Khan’s killer, Shahrukh Jataoi.

There were five suspects initially nominated in the FIR – Shahrukh, his father Sikandar Jatoi, his servant Murtaza Lashari, Siraj Talpur and his brother Sajjad Talpur. Siraj, Sajjad and Lashari have been arrested and are in police custody while the other two are still on the run.

However, Siraj Talpur, the other main accused in the Shahzeb Khan murder case, has agreed to become a state witness against Shahrukh Jatoi and will be presented in an anti-terrorism court today.

Shahzeb was shot dead near his home in Defence last year. A popular student and son of DSP Aurangzaib, Shahzeb’s murder created an uproar in civil society.

The Supreme Court took suo motu notice of the case after the news spread that influential people were creating hurdles in the arrest of the suspects. In its first hearing, the police were ordered to arrest the suspects within 24 hours or risk losing their jobs.
