Shami Ahmed attributes success to Wasim Akram and Gautam Gambhir
Tuesday, January 8th, 2013 1:15:33 by Rana Nasir GhafoorIndia’s promising right-arm pacer Shami Ahmed has credited Gautam Gambhir and Wasim Akram for his wonderful work in the third One Day International (ODI) against Pakistan at Delhi on Sunday. The 22-year-old bowled a game-changing 48th over, picking
up a crucial wicket without giving away any run.
After his superb performance against the arch-rivals, Shami did not forget to thank his mentors, saying that former Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram, who works as bowling consultant for Kolkata Knight Rider (KKR), gave him some very important tips to reverse
the white ball in the death overs.
He also credited Gambhir, and stated that the left-handed opener told him the right area to bowl at. The youngster described that a few valuable tips given by Wasim and Gambhir helped him improve his bowling to a great deal.
"The small things that he’s taught me have made me a better bowler. Things like bowling with the old ball, reversing it and maintaining it, which line to bowl when you’re trying to reverse-swing the ball. He’s taught me a lot when it comes to using the white
ball," Shami said of Akram, who is also his bowling mentor in the Indian Premier League franchise Kolkata Knight Riders.
"As an opening batsman, Gauti Bhai (Gambhir) keeps telling me what a new ball should do to trouble the batsman. Every time I bowl to him in the nets (at KKR) he doesn’t only concentrate on his batting. He makes it a point to give me honest feedback on every
delivery, which helps me improve," Shami was quoted as saying by BCCI.tv.
With Mohammad Hafeez at the crease, the Green Shirts needed 25 runs in the last three overs, when Shami bowled a magnificent over. He conceded no runs, and provided the side a crucial breakthrough. In his nine-over spell, the young pacer bowled four maidens,
giving away only 23 runs in the game.
Having done the great job against the traditional rivals, Shami’s next task is to carry the momentum forward, and do well against England. The five-game series between India and England is scheduled to start later this month.
