Tuesday, January 8th, 2013 1:05:34 by Web DeskThe United States expressed concerns over reports of violence across the Line of Control (LoC) in the disputed Kashmir region, urging both Pakistan and India to end exchange of fire.
The State Department also reiterated its support for Pakistan and India to work on lingering Kashmir issue between them. “We have consistently supported attempts between India and Pakistan to find a positive way forward between them and to work on issues of Kashmir”, State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland said at the daily briefing.
She was responding to a question about weekend Indian and Pakistani exchange of fire on the Line of Control in Kashmir and Islamabad’s lodging a protest with New Delhi over killing of a Pakistani soldier.
She said, “We have consistently supported attempts between India and Pakistan to find a positive way forward between them and to work on issues of Kashmir.”
She added, “We are concerned about any reports of violence across the Line of Control in Kashmir. We urge both sides to take steps to end exchanges of fire”, Nuland said. She also urged the two sides to resume normal trade and travel across the Line of Control in the disputed Himalayan territory.
Earlier on Monday, Pakistani Foreign Office on Monday has protested formally to India for an attack on its army post.
A statement issued by the office said the Indian deputy high commissioner was summoned to the Foreign Ministry over the unprovoked attack on an army post Sunday that killed one soldier and wounded several others. The statement warned India to avoid a recurrence of such incidents.
