Rocket attack on PIA aircraft in Afghanistan
Tuesday, January 8th, 2013 1:55:11 by Web DeskUnknown assailants fired several rockets at Kandahar airport on Tuesday while a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane was on the tarmac ready for departure, say media reports.
The aircraft, PK 199, did not sustain any major damage and the passengers and the crew remained safe as well. The plane was coming to Quetta from Kandahar. Aviation officials say the rockets fell outside the premises of the Kandahar airport.
The plane was grounded temporarily as the airfield was shut down following the attack. However, officials confirmed that the field was subsequently cleared for operation and that the PIA flight departed for Quetta.
A recent report by an Islamabad-based think tank showed that the year 2012 witnessed an unprecedented increase in cross-border rocket and mortar attacks by the Afghan Nation Army (ANA).
