Indo-American tandem, Sania Mirza and Bethanie Mattek-Sands, made a strong start to this year by capturing their third title together at the Brisbane International 2013 last weekend. They outshined the Czech-German tandem of Kveta Peschke and Anna-Lena Groenefeld with a 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 victory in the final showdown at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier event taking place in Brisbane, Australia.
Mirza and Mattek-Sands made a sloppy entry at the Queensland Tennis Centre. They displayed dismal concentration and gifted away the opening set. However, they quickly re-structured and sought their rhythm, eventually capturing the crown at this Australian Open lead-up tournament.
“In the first week of a new season you’re still kind of getting loose and getting match play in, but we were relaxed and played well this week in Brisbane,” Mattek-Sands beamed after capturing the title. “It’s always fun with Sania.”
The Indian number one talked about playing with Mattek-Sands all season.
“That’s the plan. We get along great off the court. In tight situations that friendship really helps. You trust each other. She’s my best friend on the tour.”
After clicking this title, the Indo-American duo improved to 3-0 in the title-rounds of WTA tournaments. They previously captured titles at Cincinnati six years ago and at Brussels last year.
With this title, Mirza bagged her 15th title while the American claimed her 11th WTA doubles title.
Meanwhile at the ASB Classic, Cara Black made a stunning return to WTA. The Kiwi legend was playing for the first time after having a baby and she nailed it. Black partnered with Anastasia Rodionova and breezed past their rivals to capture the title.
The former world number one in doubles, Black stated,
“It was great to be back on the court with Rodi again. We had a fun week last week in Auckland and are thrilled to have won the title. Auckland has always been one of my favorite stops on the tour, so it was really nice to be back there again.”
