The prize was presented to Ziauddin Yousafzai at the official ceremony at the Maison de l’Amerique latine.
The Simone de Beauvoir Prize for Women’s Freedom – created on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Simone de Beauvoir’s birth – distinguishes men, women and voluntary organizations who, like Simone de Beauvoir, fight to defend women’s rights wherever they are under threat. Supported by the Institut français, Paris Diderot
Her father while accepting the award said, “She fell but Pakistan stood up. And the whole world, north, south, east and west supported her. God protected her and protected the cause of humanity and education.”
Malala was shot at the point blank by a Taliban attacker as her school bus made its way through the town of Mingora in Pakistan’s northwestern Swat Valley in October last year.
Malala first rose to prominence aged just 11 with a blog for the BBC Urdu service in 2009 in which she described life in Swat during the bloody rule of the Taliban.
Her calls for improved education for girls attracted the attention of the Taliban, ultimately leading to the attempt on her life. The Taliban claimed that they shot Malala for promoting secularism.
