Dilip Vengsarkar, Ajit Wadekar back MS Dhoni
Thursday, January 10th, 2013 1:24:06 by Rana Nasir GhafoorFormer Indian skippers Dilip Vengsarkar and Ajit Wadekar have put their weight behind current captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who is facing huge criticism following India’s recent failures.
The Men in Blue lost the Test series to England, ahead of facing Pakistan lately. In the Twenty20 competition, they managed to level the series, but could not do the goods in the One Day Internationals (ODIs).
The Green Shirts crushed the home side in the opening two games. The Indians performed slightly better in the final encounter, and won it luckily by 10 runs.
The World Champions are now set to face the Poms in 5-game series, and the critics are showing no mercy on Dhoni these days. Dilip Vengsarkar and Ajit Wadekar, on the other hand, have batted for him, saying that the skipper is the only player in good form
at the moment.
"At the moment Dhoni is the only one in form. He should continue… India do not have an option. Pakistan played extremely well. I think they played better in all departments of the game," Vengsarkar told reporters after attending an event at Bhubaneswar,
alongside Ajit Wadekar.
He added, “India need to improve a lot as the coming matches with England are very important. Excess of matches like World Cup, Tests, ODIs and T20s is responsible to a certain extent."
Wadekar also admired Dhoni’s effort, and said that the wicket-keeper batsman has already taken the side to glory on many occasions. He shared: "He has been responsible for victory of Team India on many occasions."
Another cause of concern for India is that there is no immediate alternative available. Virat Kohli, who was recently given the duties as vice-skipper, is still too young to take the responsibility according to a few former players.
Dhoni is expecting the side to come up with better work against England. The Indian selectors have made slight changes in the side, dropping Virender Sehwag.
The blistering opener lost his place after doing nothing special in the opening two ODIs. Ajinkya Rahane replaced him in the third clash. He was not part of the T20s against Pakistan.
