Altaf Hussain to fire political drone attack: May demand for referendum for electoral reforms
Thursday, January 10th, 2013 11:28:46 by Faisal FarooqIn a bid to mount pressure on the government, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain Thursday announced he will fire his political drone attack within few hours.
His announcement came at a time when pressure is building on the major political parties with the approaching date of Tahirul Qadri’s Long March.
The MQM chief had urged his party workers to prepare themselves for the political drone strike and its aftereffects. Altaf Hussain’s announcement for his drone attack may turn to be his demand for holding referendum for electoral reforms.
Reports said there is immense pressure on MQM to dissociate itself from Long March. But it will be a political suicide at this stage for this party to back out from the stand it had taken on Long March. For making himself a game changer, Altaf is in the fore front in the changing political scene.
Braving criticism on being coalition partner with PPP as well his decision to participate in Long March, Altaf is weighing options to make its way in the puzzling situation.
Interior Minister Rehman Malik’s meeting with Altaf Hussain in London could not produce results while his interaction with leader of Minhaj- ul- Quran Dr Tahirul Qadri in Lahore also remained a mystery. Qadri has not butch an inch from his stand on Long March, if an impartial and affective interim set up is not placed in the country and electoral reforms are not carried before general elections.
The government and opposition leaders are critical at Hussain’s support to the march by Qadri, a Canadian-Pakistani, returned to the country last month after spending five years in Canada. The uneasy Islamabad police have already put up containers to block entry points of Red Zone much before the Long March date — Jan 14.
A high level meeting of top brass of PPP in Karachi under President Asif Ali Zardari is also reflective of the fact that the ruling party is upset over the situation as Qadri is gaining ground on his demands for electoral reforms. The next few hours are very crucial on the political scenario and can change the entire picture at once.
