Tsvetana Pironkova stuns Klara Zakopalova while Jarmila Gajdosova cruises into quarters in Hobart – Tennis News

Bulgarian number one, Tsvetana Pironkova, shocked everyone after upsetting third seed, Klara Zakopalova from Czech Republic, at the Moorilla Hobart International 2013, a WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International level event held in Hobart, Australia. Elsewhere, the local wild card entrant Jarmila Gajdosova crippled Olga Govortsova with a breadstick to progress.

Pironkova made a stunning comeback from a set down to formulate a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory against the Czech star. As a result, she avenged her loss in Paris last season and improved to a 4-2 record in the head-to-head series against Zakopalova.

The Bulgarian star was quoted in an on-court interview after stealing the limelight:

“It was a slow start for sure. Conditions were a bit hard, it was windy and her balls were very fast, she hits the ball very hard so I needed a bit of time to adjust to that.”

Next in queue for Pironkova is the ninth seed, Mona Barthel.

“I’m expecting a tough job tomorrow, she’s a really, really good player. I’ve practiced with her several times so I kind of know what to expect, but practice is a lot different from a normal match so we’ll see,” Pironkova reflected on her next match-up against the defending champion.

The world number 167, Gajdosova dropped her serve once but cashed five out of nine break chances to clobber a 6-3, 6-1 score line.

The beaming Gajdosova stated after cruising past her rival, “It was pretty windy and I knew it could be quite scrappy, so I made sure I defended well and made her play a lot of balls. In the second set, I think the wind died down a little and I could get a little more rhythm on my serve and groundstrokes. It’s nice to be in the quarters and get some matches under my belt.”
