Wikipedia launches a traveling guide
Wednesday, January 16th, 2013 3:13:19 by Farasat AliWikipedia premiered a world traveler guide on Tuesday, Wikivoyage.org, which, like the encyclopedia includes content made by the community. Right now, they are offering this service in nine languages and there are over 50,000 articles,
1,099 of them in Spanish.
Wikivoyage was founded in September 2006 by authors Germans of Wikitravel unhappy with the trade policies of the owners of this site. It then became popular with the travel theme popular in Germany, and was launched in English,
Dutch, French, Italian, Russian and Swedish, says the encyclopedia.
In mid-2012, most of the English Wikitravel community, including most of the administrators and most of the community tried to bring Wikivoyage communities with Wikitravel under a new non-commercial project.
They moved to the Wikimedia Foundation to show their interest in hosting the project, prompting a successful guidebook proposal, which was approved by the foundation in October 2012.
"There is a huge demand for traveler information, but very few sources are exhaustive and non-commercial," said foundation director, Sue Gardner. "That’s what we want to change."
By relying on the willingness of travelers, the success of this new initiative of the Wikimedia Foundation depends on your own followers active in recent years.
