World number one, Novak Djokovic from Serbia, eased past the American contender, Ryan Harrison, in straight sets at the Australian Open 2013, first of the four Grand Slam events taking place in Melbourne, Australia. The 24th seeded Jerzy Janowicz on the other hand also stole the spotlight at this major hard court event on Wednesday.
Seeded top at this event, Djokovic displayed brilliant tennis skills to crush Harrison with a breadstick. Battling each other for the third time, the Serb improved to a 3-0 lifetime in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head Series against the American rising star.
The 25-year-old made a thunderous entry at the Rod Laver Arena. He drew the first blood in the second game and jumped to a 3-0 lead. After Harrison held his serve in the fourth game, the Serb unleashed his skills again and clicked the opener with a breadstick.
Djokovic carried his momentum in the second set and got the coveted break in the opening game. He cashed another break chance in the fifth game and eventually sealed the set with a 6-2 win.
The world number two got the critical break in the opening game of the third set. He maintained consistency in his game afterwards and clinched the set with a 6-3 score line.
Janowicz on the other hand also steal the limelight in another court earlier that day. He battled past the Indian challenger, Somdev Devvarman, in a five-set thriller to progress at this event.
The Polish star was quoted in a courtside interview after bagging the match:
“What did I learn today? [That the] most important thing is you have to fight for every single ball till the end. I was losing already two-sets-to-love and I kept on fighting. You can’t control your emotions all the time. Actually, I went nuts. I calmed down a little bit later on. Sometimes I have a problem with controlling my emotions, but I’m trying to work on this.”
