2013 Malaysia Open: Chong Wei outshines Viktor Axelsen to move into pre quarter-final round

Men’s Singles expert Lee Chong Wei had a perfect start in Maybank Malaysia Open as he cleared first hurdle by beating Viktor Axelsen in the opening round on January 16, 2013.

This encounter was staged at the local badminton arena of Kuala Lumpur and it kept the audience intact for 28 minutes.

The Malaysian maestro did not find any trouble and sealed a splendid straight-set victory with an impressive result of 21-8 and 21-10.

World Number one Chong Wei ruled the court from very first stroke till the last one whereas the Danish campaigner could not pocket even a single match point.

The battle heated up straight away in the beginning of first set as Chong Wei did not give his rival enough time to get settled and confounded him with a brisk attack.

He did not show mercy in the establishing rallies and piled up a mountainous figure of 7 in no time.

This initial lead helped him in next couple of rallies and he finished first half of the set with a convincing margin of 11.

After the mid-game break, the Malaysian badminton ace injected more intensity in his attack and stamped his lower ranked competitor with a notable difference in the decisive score.

Chong Wei maintained an impressive lead of 13 points and wrapped this segment of the showdown with 21-8.

The second set proved just a formality as the Danish shuttler failed to rise on his toes and surrendered tamely.

On the other hand, Chong Wei capitalised his opponent’s bad patch and registered a straight-set victory.

At first, he mounted pressure by prevailing in six consecutive rallies and then doubled the impact with an overwhelming total of 21-10.

With this win, Chong Wei setup a pre quarter-final clash with Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand.
