Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki and the US Open champion Andy Murray cruises into the third round at the Australian Open 2013, a major hard court tournament taking place in Melbourne, Australia. The Danish diva crippled Donna Vekic with a breadstick while Murray registered a straight set victory against the Portuguese challenger, Joao Sousa, on Thursday.
Ranked 10th in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Rankings, Wozniacki smashed 13 winners and regardless of spilling 15 unforced errors, she managed to outshine Vekic.
“I knew I had to put the pressure on her and make her move from the beginning, and that I didn’t have to go for wild shots. I knew that she would feel the pressure sooner or later. I know the feeling, going in and playing a top player when you’re young. I definitely saw a lot of potential in her. I actually thought she was going to go for more, but on the other hand I could tell she can keep the ball in play and go for it when she needs to. She’s young, and she’s going to improve a lot over the next few years, and I definitely believe we’re going to see a lot more of her in the future.”
Up next for the 10th seed is the Ukrainian qualifier, Lesia Tsurenko.
Earlier that day on the same arena, the Dunblane native breezed past his rival in one hour and 41 minutes. He penned down a 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 victory against the Portuguese and progressed at this event. The Scot fired 14 aces to secure a place in the round of 32.
The British number one stated in a courtside interview after pocketing the match, “It’s good to get it done in three sets because physically, it’s very demanding.”
