Prime Minister Ashraf welcomes declaration of opposition parties
Thursday, January 17th, 2013 12:03:39 by Web DeskPrime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf has welcomed the declaration of the opposition parties at a conference held in Lahore on Wednesday regarding upholding of constitution and holding of free and fair elections in the country.
The heads of opposition parties including Pakistan Muslim League-N Chief Nawaz Sharif, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) Chief Fazlur Rehman, Jamat-e-Islami Amir Syed Munawar Hassan, Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party, Mahmood Khan Achakzai and others expressed their resolve at a joint press conference to thwart any move aimed at derailment of the democratic process and stood in clash with the Constitution.
The opposition parties strongly opposed any unconstitutional steps and said they would resist any move to derail democracy. They also announced support to the Election Commission and condemned all efforts to make the Commission controversial.
The prime minister welcoming the opposition’s stand on upholding the constitution‚ the Prime Minister assured the nation that the government is committed to free‚ fair and impartial elections as per law and constitution.
He warned that any obstacles created in its way would not be tolerated. The Prime Minister also assured all political parties that they would be consulted on all matters related to elections so that no one can point fingers on its conduct or results.
The Prime Minister said that on Wednesday’s declaration by the Opposition parties to uphold the constitution and preserve the democratic system was historic and bodes well for democracy and future of the country. He reaffirmed that elections will be held on time.
Tahirul Qadri, who returned from Canada after spending five years there, has been sitting in Islamabad along with thousands of his followers, seeking changes in electoral reforms in the system.
