Miyabi Onitsuka clinches O’Neill Evolution Big Air win
Monday, January 21st, 2013 11:18:10 by Muhammad Qasim HassanJapan’s Miyabi Onitsuka mesmerised everyone during women’s super final to take out the Ticket to Ride (TTR) 6Star O’Neill Evolution Big Air competition that concluded in Davos, Switzerland, on Saturday, January 19.
Finished in second place was Austria’s Christine Szumovski, whereas the last remaining slot on the podium was clinched by America’s Celia Miller.
Being the only women’s TTR 6Star Big Air competition of the season, the O’Neill Evolution Big Air competition was expected to deliver a heavy dose of thrilling exciting and memorable performances by the best females in the business.
With an opportunity to put their skills on display and earn 1000 coveted TTR rating points, there was hardly any reason to believe that the girls will not be able to do justice to the high-profile event.
This, however, was proven wrong as the 14-year-old Onitsuka enchanted the entire crowd and brought the judges under her spell with a splendid performance.
Proving wiser beyond her years, the Japanese rider sealed the deal with an 80.20-point run, which comprised of a front-side 360 front-side grab over the Big Air jump and then landed a lip-slide on the big stair set’s down-rail before concluding the run with a front-side board-slide down the hand-rail on the smaller stair set.
Szumovski finished in second place with a best-run score of 66.60 points. Even though she missed out on the top spot, the Australian rider had nothing but praises for Onitsuka.
“I’m so stoked on her: she’s such a champion,” second place’s Szumovski said about Onitsuka. “She’s a cutie and she’s killing it.”
Miller made her way on to the podium as well after registering a best-run score of 62.20.
