Roger Federer and Andy Murray progresses into quarters at the Australian Open 2013 – Tennis News

Second and third seeds, Roger Federer and Andy Murray, both breezed past their opponents in straight sets to book spots in the quarter-final at the Australian Open 2013 on Monday.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion, Federer stayed on course to bag another major title after triumphing over Milos Raonic. After pocketing the match, the Swiss improved to a 4-0 lifetime in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head Series against the 22-year-old.

The former world number one, Federer was quoted in courtside interview after clicking the match:

“Tonight was a very solid night, so I’m very happy. If I can maintain such a level of play, obviously I’m happy I give myself a chance of going deep in this tournament, which is obviously the goal.”

Bidding for his fifth Australian Open title, Federer high-spiritedly entered the Rod Laver Arena. He smoothly swiped his entire serves with conviction. The Swiss got the breakthrough in the last game and eventually sealed the opener with a 6-4 win.

The 31-year-old maintained consistency in his game in the proceeding set. He quickly slid his entire serves but failed to cash in any break opportunity. However, Federer dominated in the tie-breaker and clinched the set with a 7-6(4) score line.

In the final set, Federer went berserk and went on a four-game killing spree before the Canadian number one could hold on. He held his remaining serves with poise and clicked the set with a 6-2 success.

The Swiss Maestro will next face seventh seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarters.

The Olympic gold medallist on the other hand triumphed over Gilles Simon with a breadstick. He jolted down a 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 victory against the 14th seed to secure a place in the final eight.

“I felt after the first few games, because he wasn’t serving hard at all, his forehand side wasn’t moving that well either. It was just about trying to finish the match as quickly as I could and then getting ready for the next one,” said the jubilant Scot after winning the match.
