Mozilla and GeeksPhone unveil new devices with Firefox OS

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2013 1:29:44 by

Mozilla, which previously announced its partnership with Spanish company, GeeksPhone, and telecom giants, Telefonica, are set to introduce a set of developer handsets for its Firefox mobile operating system: Keon and Peak respectively.

Keon has a one-gigahertz Qualcomm processor and 3.5 inch screen with a three-megapixel camera and a VGA front camera usually used for conference calling. Peak, on the other hand, has a somewhat higher processor including a dual
core 1.2 gigahertz processor.

However, users can argue over the storage of the phones i.e. 4 GB and 512 RAM but the CEO has a different view to defend his latest venture.

"It is not what concerns us most. To this is the cloud and especially MicroSD cards. The battery in both cases is especially generous, 1580 and 1800 respectively milliamps.”

Unlike the prototype shown only two months ago, these models have only a middle button, used to return to the home screen. The operating system is quick and resembles to Android in some of the aspects with fewer menu options.

To know which applications are running at the back stage, simply tap the button right under the screen to check all the ongoing processes.

Telefonica and Mozilla Foundation announced its commitment to stand up to the increasingly powerful Android and Apple’s iPhone almost a year ago. The idea was to do present a smartphone with high end qualities at the right price
courtesy to the Mozilla’s new operating system with best technical power devices and improved the browsing experience.

Mozilla, which arguably revolutionize the mobile world when they launched their browsers and persuaded Good to come up with Chrome, want to enter the world of smartphones in growing countries, especially Latin America.

"We were selling some affordable phones, of course, but let it down in no time by giving poor or no experience to upgrade. Firefox is expected to give a significantly higher experience of satisfaction to their respective users
for similar money.”

Both Mozilla Foundation and Telefonica are involved in their manufacture, but they will not subsidize handsets.

"We have been involved with the purchase of a large number of mobile GeeksPhone. But we do not want to give specific figures about market price or release date. All we can assure it that they will be attractive and affordable,
"Carlos Domingo, Director of Innovation at Telefonica Digital, was quoted as saying.
