Justin Dorey pulls out of X Games Aspen 2013
Thursday, January 24th, 2013 11:57:35 by Muhammad Qasim HassanCanadian half-pipe Justin Dorey will not be competing in the latest edition of Winter X Games that is scheduled to kick-off in Aspen, Colorado, on Thursday, January 24.
The 24-year-old freeskier said that he has still not fully recovered from the shoulder injury that he sustained during Men’s Ski SuperPipe at last year’s Winter X Games, which is why he has decided to stay on the sidelines at the upcoming event.
He admitted during an interview with XGames.com on Tuesday that even though he had planned on getting his shoulder operated in spring last year, he eventually opted out of it as he failed to see the point in going through with it since his shoulder had started feeling really good.
“I originally planned to get surgery last spring after the season, but my shoulder felt so good, I opted out of surgery,” Dorey said.
This decision, however, came back to haunt him as his shoulder got dislocated again while training in Breckenridge this past weekend. This time, the injury turned out to be even more severe than before, with his joint getting damaged, tendons getting severed, and rotator cuff getting torn.
Realising the mistake that he made last year, Dorey is not wasting any time to get his shoulder operated, with the surgery already scheduled to take place in Canada this coming Thursday.
The Vernon-based freeskier is pretty disappointed about missing out on the opportunity to compete in what was going to be his eighth appearance in the winter edition of X Games.
“This would have been my eighth X Games and I was really excited to compete this week,” Dorey said. “Now, unfortunately, I’ll be heading back to Canada to get surgery and I’ll have to watch the X Games on TV.”
Dorey had been looking deadly this season. Walking away with the win in the current season’s first major half-pipe content, the Dew Tour’s Ion Mountain Championships, in Breckenridge, there was a good reason for him to be really looking forward to competing in Winter X Games, where he had never been able to find a place on the podium in Men’s Ski SuperPipe.
Unfortunately, he has been forced to wait yet another year to try to put his skills on display at the biggest stage in action sports.
