New Zealand’s Marina Erakovic surprised everyone after stunning the third seed, Su-Wei Hsieh, in straight sets at the PTT Pattaya Open 2013, a WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International event taking place inThailand. She jolted down a 6-2, 6-2 victory against the Taiwanese to power into the second round on Monday.
The Kiwi number one showed tremendous skills to overpower Hsieh for the first time in their third encounter. After stealing the limelight in one hour and eight minutes, Erakovic not only avenged her losses against the world number 25 but also secured a place in the round of 16 at this outdoor hard court event.
“I felt like both of us started a little nervous because it was a first round,” Erakovic said. “But, you know, I really tried to play aggressive and get used to the conditions and the court, and I think I did really well today, so I’m happy with myself. I played Su-Wei a long, long time ago at an ITF tournament inCaliforniaso I really didn’t know what to expect. I know she’s a very tricky player and has some great shots, so I knew that I had to be really alert out there.”
Erakovic made a sloppy start at thee Thai hard courts. She suffered the first blow early in the set and went 0-2 down. However, the Kiwi unleashed her skills and reeled off the following six games consecutively.
Ranked 75th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Erakovic kept momentum rolling in the proceeding set. She held her entire serve with poise and eventually sealed the set by winning six games to two.
The French contender Mathilde Johansson will accompany Erakovic in the following round. She trashedTaiwan’s Kai-Chen Chang in straight sets t progress.
