Ashley Giles calls India tour a learning experience
Tuesday, January 29th, 2013 1:24:16 by Rana Nasir GhafoorNewly-appointed England coach Ashley Giles was slightly disappointing over the 2-3 ODI loss in India, but called the tour as a great learning experience.
The former left-arm spinner, who recently took over the responsibility from Andy Flower, was on his very first coaching assignment, and admitted that a tough India tour also taught him a thing or two.
"We have done pretty well with a fairly inexperienced side – 3-2 is not a disaster. We did not win the series but we have learned a lot. Certainly I have learned a lot about this level and as the tour has gone on I have become more and more myself,β Giles
stated.
"It has been an enjoyable tour, playing cricket in these beautiful arenas, and while we are disappointed to lose, we have learned a lot," he added.
The Englishmen won the Test series comprehensively, but failed to continue the winning momentum in limited-over cricket. Although they did well in the final two ODIs, a lacklustre performance in the initial games hurt their cause badly.
Talking about the positive he drew out from the tour, Giles did not forget to mention all-rounder Joe Root’s performance. The youngster impressed everyone by smashing an aggressive knock of 57 off 45 balls in the fourth game. He also did well at Dharamsala,
adding crucial 31 runs to the total.
The coach described: "I didn’t know he could bat as well as he has. He had all the ingredients to show that he could bat really well. He just looks at home and he’s the sort of player with which English cricket is in good hands.β
"Joe’s had a fantastic first tour and has developed game on game into someone who is playing all forms of the game."
Another player who managed to impress the new coach was James Tredwell, who picked up 11 wickets in the ODI series. He said of the Kent spinner:
βIt just gives us great options – I don’t see at some point why you couldn’t play two off-spinners in the same side. Tredders has been fantastic this trip, he was ‘Steady Treddy’."
