Fifth seeded Roberta Vinci was the only seed who progressed on Tuesday after crushing Simona Halep at the Open GDF Suez 2013, a WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier event taking place in Paris. The seventh seeded Julia Goerges on the other hand saw the exit doors after edging out by Kristina Mladenovic.
The Italian seed displayed spectacular skills to outclass Halep in less than an hour. She jolted down a 6-0, 6-3 victory against the world number 48 and took a 2-1 lead in their head-to-head series.
Vinci was quoted in a courtside interview after pocketing the match:
“The conditions are obviously much different to the ones in Australia so it was tough getting used to that, but I’m happy it was a quick match. We had good rallies and it was good tennis.”
The German star, Goerges made a dismal start at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin. She lost the opening set but remained calm, eventually equalising the set scores. However, the seventh seed lost her track again in the final set tie-breaker and eventually suffered a 5-7, 7-5, 6-7(4) loss.
Elsewhere, Alize Cornet recorded her first victory in her fourth meeting against the Swedish star, Sofia Arvidsson. She summed up a 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 victory against Arvidsson and progressed at her home event. Cornet commented in a post match press conference:
“I finally found the key to beating Sofia and it really makes me happy. I’m very happy I could come back after the second set and win like that in the third. Everything today was positive and I really want to keep the same level.”
The Bulgarian number one, Tsvetana Pironkova, also suffered a shocking defeat. She endured a 4-6, 2-6 loss at the hands of the Swiss qualifier, Stefanie Voegele.
