Deadly suicide attack kills 22 in Hangu

A suicide bomber blew himself up near an Imambargah and a mosque in Hangu on Friday and killed nearly 22 people and injured around 40 others, police and witnesses said.

The blast occurred as the people were coming out of the mosque at the crowded Pat Bazaar area of Hangu in Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa province.

Mian Muhammad Saeed, District Police Officer (D.P.O) of Hangu said that the bomb went off when people were coming out of the mosque after saying Friday prayers.

According to the initial reports, the bomb was detonated by a remote control and explosives were fixed in a motorbike parked outside the mosque, said the D.P.O.

The injured were shifted to District Hospital Hangu while critical injured were transferred to Kohat and Peshawar. Some injured were registered critical.

Police said the attack was carried out in a street near Masjid Faizullah of Shiites and Masjid Purdil of Sunnis. They said the pro-government Sunni leaders routinely holds their meetings in the Purdil mosque. Both could be the possible targets, sources said.

No group claimed responsibility.

President Asif Ali Zardari has strongly condemned the bomb blast and in a condolence message expressed his shock and grief over the loss of precious human lives and injuries caused by the blast.

He reiterated the government’s resolve not to be deterred by such cowardly acts of terrorists and continue to fight till the complete elimination of this menace.

The President prayed to Almighty Allah to rest the departed souls in eternal peace and grant courage to the bereaved families.

He also directed the concerned authorities to ensure the provision of best medical facilities to the injured.
