Arsene Wenger’s men displayed solid performance and eventually managed to outclass Stoke City at the Emirates Stadium this Sundays. Lukas Podolski’s deflected free-kick gave Arsenal the lead in the 78th minute and helped them stay in the sixth spot at the Barclays English Premier League.
The Gunners showed tremendous skills throughout the opening half but failed to get the breakthrough. In the following half, Arsenal missed chances again before having a double substitution. They called in Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla who replaced Abou Diaby and Alex Oxland Chamberlain. The subs lifted Gunners game and created several chances. 12 minutes to full time, the German international hit a low shot which went into the goal after a deflection. The assistant referee disallowed it but referee Chris Foy is clear about the goal.
The Frenchman, Wenger, stated in a post match press conference:
“They made it difficult for us, they were well organised, defended very deeply and we didn’t find the space but kept going. We were a bit lucky on the goal but overall we deserve this win. We had chances, their keeper made some saves. We played in one half in the second half especially and overall we deserved to win the game.”
The Red Army sought many chances in this game but failed to create enough. However, they haven’t lost in their past four matches. They were trailing 0-2 against Liverpool when they hit back with a bang and managed to pull out a draw. Wenger was happy of not conceding any goals today and reflected:
“We are a team who can create chances, and score goals. Today it was not the case – we created chances but could not get the goals. But still I am happy that for a long time now, we didn’t concede and the defence looked solid.”
Arsenal will next face Sunderland at the Stadium of Lights.
