Kahn expects Guardiola to play Bayern like Barcelona
Monday, February 4th, 2013 2:07:16 by Rizwan KazmiThe former Germany international has issued a warning that there could be vital changes when the former Barcelona coach takes charge, saying that the players will need to adjust quickly.
Former Bayern Munich and Karlsruher SC goalkeeper is aware of the impact Pep Guardiola will have on the Bavarian giants’ style of play and the consequent results, when the talented trainer will resume charge of the club from current head coach Jupp Heynckes at the end of the season.
The former FC Barcelona boss rose to fame for his concentration on academy players along with his re-introduction of possession football. As a result of this, he is regarded as one of the best coaches at the moment, and he was well sought after he took a sabbatical from the game last year.
“Guardiola brought up players from youth to professional levels, but Bayern’s players need not possess the same level of automatism as Barcelona’s do,” he was quoted as saying in an interview.
“To internalise his systems will not happen in one day. Unlike [ex-Bavarian coach] Louis van Gaal’s single-minded usage of the ball to achieve an end result, Guardiola’s system is more flexible, with possession central to play,” he added.
“Anyone not willing to participate in this collective movement will find it very hard in his system. For example, part of his success lay with Lionel Messi’s use as a ‘false number nine’, but it is interesting to see if Bayern can play in the future like that,” he mused.
“Guardiola and sports director Matthias Sammer must develop and implement a consistent philosophy. Doing so will be a decisive factor in the battle to be Europe’s number one team,” he finally concluded.
However, Kahn believes Pep has to prove himself at the Allianz Arena as he was recently announced as the next Der FCB manager.
