Tampa Bay Rays sign free agent relief pitcher Kyle Farnsworth
Wednesday, February 6th, 2013 9:06:55 by Umair HassanThe Tampa Bay Rays have signed free agent relief pitcher Kyle Farnsworth to a one year deal. He will earn approximately $1.25 million along with incentives of worth $1.35 for his one year contract.
Playing for the Rays in the last Major League outing, he missed almost half a season with his elbow strain but still managed to produce consistent numbers.
“My arm feels real good right now, I’ve been throwing my sliders right now, and everything feels good. As far as that stuff, everything feels as good as it ever has,” Farnsworth said.
He finished the season on a high note and achieved 4.00 ERA along with 25 strikeouts and 1.33 WHIP. Not only he did a good job in the last season by producing persistent performance but overall his career stats are also quite consistent.
He currently caries relentless career 4.24 ERA along with total 52 saves, 917 strikeouts and 1.36 WHIP. That is also a main reason why the Rays showed so much confidence on him and re-signed him for another competitive season.
Meanwhile, the Rays are looking good in this off-season with some potential signings. They Rays management has recently added another talented player second baseman Kelly Johnson.
“The reason we kept going (in negotiations) was my openness to do that. I’m absolutely open to do that. I’m excited. I expect to see time in the outfield, second base,” Johnson said Tuesday night.
Johnson added of his offense, “That process is ongoing, I’m stubborn and slow to make an adjustment that would get me back on track to the way I was going in 2010. I wish that adjustment happened April 1, 2011. It’s the way baseball is, it’s a tough game, and hitting is one of those things where you just fight yourself and put pressure on yourself.”
Later Rays’ executive vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said of Kelly, “We’re excited about what Kelly is capable of doing, I think he’d be the first to say that last year was a down year. We think he has a chance to be a really good addition and provide a lot of value for us offensively and also with impending versatility defensively.”
With Johnson’s inclusion, the Rays will certainly come up with more aggression in the coming season.
