PM Ashraf says no room for elections delay
Thursday, February 7th, 2013 12:19:32 by Tahir KhanPrime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf Thursday made it clear that there is no room for any delay of the parliamentary elections, the comment will frustrate handful of elements, who are bent upon derailing the democratic process.
The government will complete five-year term in mid-March and some ministers have indicated polls could be held in the first week of May. Some even hinted elections could be held in April.
PPP leaders say the government has decide date for the elections and the President will disclose the timing.
Prime Minister Pervez Asharf discussed matters regarding elections with Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Farooq H. Naek, the PM media office said.
“The Law Minister gave the Prime Minister a comprehensive briefing about the role of Election Commission and measures taken by the Government to ensure free, fair and transparent elections in the country,” an official statement said.
During the meeting they also discussed the current situation in the back drop of parleys with leaders of PML-Q and reviewed the overall arrangements of the election process in the country.
The Prime Minister directed the Law Minister to ensure that the constitution and law are followed in letter and spirit in the run up to the next elections so that there is no room for any delay.
The Prime Minister appreciated the efforts made by the Ministry of Law particularly Mr Farooq H. Naek in the preparation of Fair Trial Bill and its successful passage by both Houses of Parliament.
The gov’t and the major opposition, Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) and other parties are in favour of elections on time and they have started consultations for possible alliances and seat-adjustment.
The Election Commission says it is also ready for the polls any time, however, rumour mongers are active to conspire against the smooth transition, also citing poor law and order in parts of the country.
It is also believed that those parties which foresee election defeat are also trying to make the Election Commission controversial, which was formed with consensus of the treasury and the opposition benches.
