Romanian contender, Victor Hanescu, dumped the Spanish qualifier, Guillermo Olaso, with a breadstick at the Open Sud de France 2013 on Tuesday. He jolted down a 6-1, 7-6(6) victory against the Spaniard to secure a spot in the second round at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 Series event taking place in Montpellier, France. The Czech rising star, Jan Hajek, will accompany Hanescu in the round of 16 after recording a comeback victory.
The world number 59, Hanescu warded off late resilience posed by the Spaniard to steal the show. After bagging the match in one hour and 11 minutes, the Romanian secured a place in the pre-quarters at this indoor hard court tournament.
The 31-year-old made a powerful entry at these French courts. He drew the first blood in the opening game and leaped to a 3-0 lead. After the Spaniard plucked his serve for the first time in the fourth game, Hanescu pocketed the last three games and eventually clicked the opener with a breadstick.
In the proceeding set, both contestants played brilliant tennis and dragged the set to a tie-breaker. The Romanian edged past Olaso in it and clinched the set with a 7-6(6) score line.
The Czech contender on the other hand bounced back from a set down to outclass the Israeli star, Dudi Sela, in a three-set thriller to progress. He found his rhythm in the end of the second set and eventually pulled out the victory with a breadstick. Hajek eventually summed up a 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory against the Israeli to advance.
Elsewhere, the ninth seeded Paul-Henri Mathieu faced a brutal fate. He suffered a 4-6, 4-6 loss against the Ukrainian star, Sergiy Stakhovsky, in one hour and 17 minutes. The former world number eight dusted away 8 out of 12 breakpoints he came across and subsequently exited from this tournament with disappointment.
