Strike against killing of religious scholars disrupts life in Karachi
Friday, February 8th, 2013 11:12:54 by Tahir KhanRoutine life was disrupted in the commercial center of Karachi on Friday on a strike call by religious parties against the recent target killing of Islamic scholars by terrorists.
The strike was called by the Ahl-i-Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) and was supported by Jamiat ulema-e-Islam, Jamaat-e-Islami and several other groups. Traders had also joined the protest as they are also fed up with the ongoing wave of sectarian killings.
The Shia Ulema Council also backed the strike call in a goodwill gesture for sectarian harmony.
“We have suffered the most in the recent wave of terrorism,” said Maulana Nazir Abbas Taqvi of the Shia Ulema Council. “We feel the same pain for those families whose loved ones fell prey to this madness, regardless of their sectarian association and their faith. Killing of every innocent man should be condemned by all sections.”
Markets, businesses and schools were closed in different parts of Karachi while public transport was off the roads. People faced problems to find transport and some taxis were seen on roads.
Unidentified people burnt two buses and angry protestors burnt tyrs if several areas.
A cracker attack was also reported, injuring two policemen. Incidents of rioting and gunfire were reported in Guru Mandir area of the city where some protestors blocked the roads.
Rioters blocked the National Highway near Quaidabad’s Murghi Khana area whereas Mauripur road was closed for traffic by protestors.
One person was killed by gunfire near Capri cinema on M. A. Jinnah road, police sources said.
The recent target killing of the religious clerics has sparked condemnation of the law enforcement agencies to check.
The Supreme Court is also hearing the law and order case in Karachi and the judges have expressed serious concern over the poor law and order.
On Friday the judges noted that thousands of illegal immigrants are living in Karachi but no one is taking action.
There is no let up in the wave of target attacks in Karachi and on Thursday the death toll reached to 15, including two brothers and a doctor, were killed.
