Shikhar Dhawan determined not to waste any opportunity
Monday, February 11th, 2013 3:23:35 by Rana Nasir GhafoorSince his first class debut in 2004, Shikhar Dhawan has not been able to get consistency, and this has given him plenty of trouble. The youngster has again got an opportunity, as he becomes a member of the Indian Test squad for Australia challenge.
But he is not ready to let things slip out of his hands this time, and looks fully determined to make the best of this chance.
"I can’t blame anyone for not being able to cement my place in the India squad when I was touring West Indies last year. I wasn’t consistent enough and that’s why couldn’t play more than five ODIs. I guess, it’s all in the mind and I am not going to let
this opportunity go," the 27-year-old told PTI during an interview.
Dhawan has played five One Day Internationals (ODIs) so far. He did well in West Indies, when scoring a brilliant half-century. However, the batsman completely failed to deliver consistently. He is not putting forward any excuses, but stated that it was
tough in the Caribbean.
He added, "No excuses for not delivering but pitches in West Indies were extremely slow and the ball wasn’t coming onto the bat. I should have scored more runs.”
"While going into the Irani Cup, I didn’t want to think about selection as I had done in some earlier occasions while playing these kind of games before a team selection.”
"I batted freely and should have got a century. But the key to my success this season is my consistency. I have not thrown away after getting into the 30’s and 40’s."
Dhawan has a wonderful domestic record, scoring 5679 runs in 81 first-class matches. He feels that his hundred against England in a practice game helped him get a place in the side. He described that his confidence is at a high after scoring good runs against
an international bowling attack.
The Indians are all set to meet the Aussies in four-match series, starting at Chennai. The Kangaroos, after crushing the Windies, have reached India. They are scheduled to play a couple of practice games before the first Test battle.
