Watzke: Lewandowski set to stay
Thursday, February 14th, 2013 4:16:11 by Rizwan KazmiThe Black Yellows’ general manager Hans-Joachim Watzke stressed that the star striker could stay at Signal Iduna Park, while the player himself said that he will not move to Bayern Munich.
Borussia Dortmund general manager Hans-Joachim Watzke has denied talks of Robert Lewandowski leaving at the end of the season and suggested he might choose to stay with the reigning German champions. English Premier League side Manchester United have also been linked with the prolific goalscorer.
However, recent reports say that Bayern are the current favourites to land his services. The BVB club official is not worried about losing their prized asset and revealed no offers have come in for the Poland international.
“There are no enquiries. However, I’m aware of the interest in the player, which is normal [considering his quality]. We’re in a good situation and we’re not forced to sell players,” he was quoted as saying in an interview.
“When the offers come, we will talk to Robert, but there’s a good chance he decides to stay with us. We are playing Champions League and have a good chance to qualify again for next season, I just don’t see the necessity to let go any players,” he added.
“It’s tough to say how valuable this draw is, the second leg will show that and I hope we can proceed to the next round,” he mused.
“For now I’m still a Borussia Dortmund player and even though I’m banned at the moment, I hope to be back for the cup game versus Bayern,” he stated.
“I didn’t talk to Matthaus; I have no clue [where he got this information],” he finally concluded.
Watzke stated that he knows about the interest of top European clubs in Lewandowski and said it is not a big deal as he is amongst the top strikers at the moment.
