Liverpool’s boss Brendan Rodgers thinks the Reds can make a comeback at the Europa League. They suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Russian giants, Zenit St Petersburg on Thursday and dealt a major blow to the progression of last 16 at this European competition.
The reds displayed brilliant defensive skills and took the match to half time without conceding any goal. In the following half the Russians found the breakthrough in the 69th minute when Hulk smashed the opener. Few minutes later a substitute Sergei Semak tap-in another goal which eventually saw the Red suffering 2-0 defeat.
The Liverpool’s tactician was quoted in a post match press conference:
“The next goal in the tie is vitally important. What gives us great hope is that we created enough tonight to win the game. The atmosphere at Anfield will be fantastic – as it always is – and the fans will get behind the players. If we can get [the next goal], it can create momentum for us. There’s no way the tie is over.”
Rodgers believes that his side are growing every day and in few months they will be great. He reflected,
“In six to 12 months we won’t be making those mistakes,” said Rodgers. “This is a group that is growing and has come together. And this is part of our growing pains as a group. We’ve put in some terrific performances this season and not always got the results. We have to be more clinical and that is something that, over the coming months, will certainly take place.”
Liverpool will next take on Swansea at Anfield on Sunday at the Barclays English Premier League. They lost to West Brom earlier this week and are standing at ninth in the EPL rankings.
