Canadian star, Milos Raonic, stayed on track to bid his third straight title at the SAP Open 2013, an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event taking place in San Jose, United States. The American challenger Sam Querrey and John Isner also secured semi-final spot.
The defending champion, Raonic, smashed 14 aces to ease past sixth seeded Denis Istomin with a 7-6(0), 6-3 victory. He needed one hour and 20 minutes to set up a date with the third seed, Querrey.
The 22-year-old was quoted in a courtside interview after pocketing the match,
“Even now, no matter how established I am or how much people think I’m favoured to win a lot of my matches, I still get nervous. I find situations where I am a little bit bloated in my head, I sort of play worse. I think having those nerves when I am starting out matches keeps me sharp.”
The former Top 10, Isner outclassed eighth seeded Xavier Malisse from Belgium to secure a place in the last four. He notched up a 7-6(8), 6-2 victory against Malisse in one hour and eight minutes.
“I felt like we both served very well in the first set,” Isner commented afterwards. “He didn’t give me much. Just like my match Wednesday night, I played my best tennis toward the end of the match. When I’m up a break, I feel like that’s when my sense of urgency is the best. I don’t want to hit a ball besides my serve. I finish a lot of matches off with aces and no return of serves.”
The former world number two, Tommy Haas from Germany booked the last spot of the semi-finals. He dismissed the local wild card entrant, Steve Johnson, in straight sets to progress at this hard court event.
