The New York Yankees star short stop Derek Jeter is optimistic for his potential return on Opening Day after suffering ankle injury during the Game 1 of the 2012 American League Central Series against the Detroit Tigers.
He recently gave a detailed interview after completing a physical of almost 17-minute session. Talking about this year’s Opening Day, Jeter told the reporters about the realistic chances of his potential return,
“Why wouldn’t it be realistic? I broke my ankle in October. It’s been quite some time. I’m right where I’m supposed to be, up until this point. The ankle has healed perfectly. And now it’s just a matter of getting everything else in shape. You’ve got to wait for the bone to heal before you can do any activities, and that’s even before baseball activities. Now it’s just progressing up into that point. I’m going to have to push myself. But Opening Day, yeah, that’s been the goal all along.”
One reporter asked Jeter that how he thinks he’ll be out until March?
Jeter responded with confidence saying, “I don’t know. I haven’t run yet. I would assume it would be at least a few weeks. But don’t hold me to it. We haven’t sat down and really put together any kind of gameplan. But I know I won’t be playing when they start playing in a week. So you can write that down.”
He added, “I’m not playing in that game. I don’t think you necessarily need all of spring training in order to get ready. There’s been years where I’ve played in the WBC, and missed the majority of spring training, and still was able to get ready. I don’t know exactly the date that I’m going to play, but it’ll probably be after a couple weeks.”
For Yankees and Derek Jeter’s fans, it is certainly a great sign that he will be out on the field next season. At the time of his injury, he was going great and showing great consistency with .316 hitting average along wit15 home runs, 58 RBIs and .362 OBP.
