Arsenal’s boss, Arsene Wenger, praised the last year’s runner-up, Bayern Munich, after his side suffered a 3-1 loss at the Emirates Stadium in the UEFA Champions League last 16 battle. The Gunners started the game with poise. However, after five minutes they lost their track.
They conceded two goals (Toni Kroos spectacular shot and Thomas Muller) inside 21 minutes and eventually sealed the opening half at 0-2. In the 55th minute, Lukas Podolski grabbed a goal back with a beautiful header but Mario Mandzukic took Bayern Munich to a 3-1 lead in the 77th minute.
The Frenchman reflected about his team’s performance in the first leg: “We played against a good team who took advantage of every opportunity they created in the first half. We had quite a good start for five minutes. You could see we were a a bit nervous, but Bayern was fully confident and we paid for it. At 2-0 down of course it became very difficult, but we put in a good battle in the second half and came back to 2-1. It looked like we could come back to 2-2, but unfortunately we conceded another goal.”
When asked whether the lack of confidence was the reason of our defeat, Wenger praised their rivals and reflected: “No, you have to give them credit for their class as well. They are a team of class”
The Red Army came into the action after suffering a shocking fifth round FA Cup exit at the hands of Blackburn. However, they gave their all and responded well. The Arsenal tactician commented, “I think we had a good response today, the players gave absolutely everything. We played against a side who have no doubt at all.”
