MQM boycotts NA session over LG system withdrawal
Friday, February 22nd, 2013 6:03:13 by Tahir KhanThe Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Friday walked out of the National Assembly session to protest the Sindh government’s decision to repeal the Sindh Peoples Local Government Act 2012 (SPLGA).
Speaking on a point of order, MQM’s Asif Husnain said that the government had negated the basic principles of democracy by repealing the SPLGA and restoring the Sindh Local Government Ordinance 1979.
“The Local Government Ordinance, which has been restored, was basically a law introduced by a dictator. We strongly condemn it and walk-out of the session,” Husnain said.
He said that the Sindh’s local government bill was passed in a haste, which was a non-democratic action along the same lines as in a dictatorship.
The National Assembly session was headed by Chaudhry Abdul Ghafoor during which the MQM legislators protested against the replacement of the Sindh’s People Local Government Act, 2012 (SPLGO 2012) with the Sindh Local Government Ordinanace 1979 and staged a walkout.
The MQM also opposed the PPP move in the Sindh assembly on Thursday, raising tension between the old allies.
Governor Sindh, Dr Eshrat-ul-Ebad Khan, has gone to London to meet Altaf Hudssain, amid speculations that he might also resign.
The MQM parted ways with the federal and Sindh government this month after siding with the PPP for five years.
The MQM had been under harsh criticism by the PML-N for quitting and joining the government again and again.
The PML-N has also termed the recent MQM decision as a ‘topi drama’.
