Asma snubs critics on caretaker PM post
Saturday, February 23rd, 2013 2:56:37 by Tahir KhanRenowned human rights activist and former president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, Asma Jahangir has said that she has no desire of becoming the caretaker prime minister.
The Difa-e-Pakistan Council (DPC) and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) had rejected Asma’s name after reports suggested that she could also be nominated as the caretaker prime minister.
PTI was of the opinion that she was not acceptable to his party as the caretaker PM because of her views on the Supreme Court and her closeness towards the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
Imran had later clarified that the opposition to Asma’s possible nomination was not for personal reasons.
Asma Jehangir said that she has no desire to become the caretaker prime minister.
She said some people come into power in the name of the people and then refuse to party with it.
She expressed apprehensions that certain forces were trying to create chaos in the country but added that elections would happen on time.
She said the country’s current situation was a result of the actions taken by regimes of the past, adding that democracy should continue to flourish in Pakistan. She further said it would be better if retired judges did not join the caretaker set-up.
Earlier in January, Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan had said his party would oppose the nomination of Jahangir for caretaker prime minister.
“The PML-N has endorsed the name of rights activist Asma Jehangir for caretaker prime minister. We oppose this as she has association with the PPP,” Khan had said at a news conference.
The gov’t will complete its five-year term on March 17 and a caretaker PM will be installed to hold elections. The govt and the opposition are supposed to hold talks on a consensus man for the post.
