The latest day of Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star 2013 Burton Toyota Pro featured some really mesmerising performances by many of the world’s top surfing talent in the promised swell that finally arrived at Merewether in Newcastle, Australia, on Thursday, February 21, 2013.

One of the most notable performances of the day came from the event’s second seed Adriano de Souza from Brazil, who completely dominated his Australian opponents in the final heat of Round 2.

The Brazilian surfer stamped his authority in the four-man heat with a 9.87 off his first business-wave and went on to back it up with a 7.83-point ride, thus registering a winning heat-total of 17.70 points.

This was exactly the sort of start that De Souza would have been hoping for at his final event before beginning his campaign for the 2012 ASP World Championship Title.

“I love Newcastle although I haven’t surfed this event since 2008 but it is just as I remember, good waves with power” said De Souza. “I’ve been in Australia for a full month working closely with my surfboard shaper Darren Handley and right now I feel good – my equipment and fitness and I am excited for the season.”

Australia’s Julian Wilson was nothing short of impressive during his Round 2 heat either on the latest day of the competition.

Earning a 7.83 and 5.37 off his best-two waves in a four-man heat that comprised of his fellow compatriots Cooper Chapman, Dale Lovelock and Stu Kennedy, Wilson did not let the fans down and made it quite evident that he is feeling good about his surfing right now.

Reigning ASP World Champion and the event No.1 seed Joel Parkinson survived his Round 3 heat to advance to the fourth round, though he was unable to keep Brazil’s Binos Lopez from walking away with the win.

The Australian surfer was not looking too classy for the first few minutes of the heat and even found himself slipping to last position at one point. However, he proved his ability to bounce back from any situation after unleashing an excellent 8.67-point ride to rise up to second place.

The heats are expected to get only better and more intense as the competition field continues to get thinner, leaving only the most in-form surfers in contention for the overall win at the Burton Toyota Pro.
