Top seeded David Ferrer successfully defended his title at the Copa Claro in Buenos Aires on Sunday. He battled past the Swiss star, Stanislas Wawrinka, in a three-set thriller to capture his 20th ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour title. Elsewhere fifth seeded Kei Nishikori and the French number one Jo-Wilfried Tsonga conquered their respective tournaments and grabbed the titles.
The Spanish number one, Ferrer displayed tremendous skills to outclass Wawrinka with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory. As a result, he bagged his 10th crown on clay courts and conquered his second title of the season. The Spaniard was quoted in a courtside interview after pocketing the match,
“I am very happy for this title. I cannot describe it with other words. It’s very hard to win back-to-back titles, and this tournament in Buenos Aires is always very tough. I am very proud.”
After conquering this match in one hour and 45 minutes, he improved to a 7-3 lifetime in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series against Wawrinka.
In the North America, Kei Nishikori stole the show after dismissing Feliciano Lopez in straight sets at the US National Indoor Tennis Championships. He recorded a 6-2, 6-3 victory against the Spaniard and became the first Japanese to in this crown. Nishikori did not drop a single set en route to the title.
“I’m very happy with the way I played today,” said Nishikori. “To win this title is an amazing feeling. I tried to concentrate on all the important points. I served really well this week. I was practising a lot and it’s getting better. Hopefully I can win a couple more titles. It’s been a good start to the year.”
In France, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga ruled at his home soil tournament at the Open 13. He stunned top seeded Tomas Berdych with a 3-6, 7-6(6), 6-4 victory and gained 250 Emirates ATP ranking points.
“This is a great victory,” the second seed reflected after clicking the tournament. “I stayed in the match even when it was very difficult and waited for my chance. I survived and took my chance when it came. I’m very happy. This shows me that I’m on the right way. The draw was very strong here.
