PM reviews power situation in an emergency meeting

The meeting was attended by Ch Ahmad Mukhtar Minister for Water and Power, Mr Saleem H Mandviwala Minister for Finance, Dr Asim Hussain Advisor to Prime Minister on Petroleum and senior officials of Ministry of Water and Power.
The power supply was cut off last Sunday due to a major breakdown‚ affecting the entire country.
The meeting was informed that the electricity break down in the country Sunday night was due to a technical fault and that electricity has been restored in most parts of the country whereas it would be restored in the rest of the country before evening.
The Prime Minister was also informed that as directed by him an Inquiry Committee has been constituted with Member (Power) WAPDA as its Convener to ascertain the reasons behind the breakdown and fix responsibility. The Committee will submit its findings along with recommendations within seven days.
The Prime Minister said that no one would be spared and severe action will be taken against anyone found negligent of his duties or in any way found responsible for having failed in his duties leading to break down of the electricity in the country.
During the meeting the present supply and demand position of power as well as availability of fuel for thermal power plants and provision of gas was discussed in detail.
The Prime Minister directed the Ministry of Water and Power that every measure should be taken to ensure that the supply and demand gap is minimized and consumers face the minimum inconvenience.
Secretary Water and Power, Rai Sikandar, said that production of 5‚800 mega watt electricity has been restored while work is underway to overcome the remaining shortfall.
The breakdown reportedly occurred when Tarbela and Mangla power plants tripped suddenly.
