Veteran Major League outfielder Johnny Damon has recently commented in the media that he can still hit and looking forward to make a potential return with a big franchise, probably with the South New York baseball franchise, the New York Yankees.
Damon officially has retired from the game but still eager to play for the Yankees especially in the absence of their star centre fielder Curtis Granderson, who is currently injured with a fractured right forearm.
“I don’t expect to hear from them,” Damon told the Daily News by telephone. “If they call, if they want me, I’ll go. They are one of the only teams I would do that for. We’ll see what happens in the future. If someone calls, I could definitely get ready.”
Damon added, “I can still hit, I still know I’m better than 70-80 percent of the guys out there. I know if I played every day, I’d be really good.”
Damon last played for the Cleveland Indians in 2012 Major League Baseball season and achieved .222 hitting average along with four homers, 19 RBIs and .281 OBP.
“Cleveland was just a weird situation; I could never get in a groove,” Damon said. “I wasn’t playing regularly, so I never found my timing. I guess if you have a bad year and get hurt, you get re-signed, I had a good year there and they didn’t want me back.”
Along with a good last Major League outing, Damon also has a great career batting average of .284 along with 235 home runs, 1139 RBIs and .352 OBP. Though Damon was exceptional in the outfield in 2012 season, but still could not get fresh contract with the Indians.
“They had their chances to bring me back a few times,” Damon said. “They decided to go with Johnson and Ibanez, so it’s hard to imagine this injury will change that. I have to be, I’ve had a great career. I’ve won two championships in two pretty awesome markets and put up some pretty awesome numbers along the way.”
Meanwhile, the experts are now quite sure that Damon is a potential candidate who certainly will represent truly Curtis Granderson’s absence in the next season.
