Saeed Ajmal wants to win the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 for Pakistan

Saeed Ajmal, the Pakistan off-spinner, has expressed that his team is desperate to win the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2013 and said that there is nothing like winning a global event.

Since the ICC World T20 2007 in South Africa, the Green Shirts have done remarkably well in the ICC events, qualifying for the semi-finals of each one of them. However, apart from the ICC World T20 2009 in England, Pakistan failed to clinch any other trophy.

Pakistan team is currently in South Africa, preparing for the limited-overs series against the Proteas after a disastrous performance in the longer version of the sport, being whitewashed in the three-match series.

Ajmal however, believes that Pakistan is a much better side in the shorter formats and is confident that the side will deliver the goods in the Champions Trophy, which is scheduled to be played in England in June this year.

In the previous Champions Trophy, held in South Africa in 2009, the Men in Green lost to New Zealand in the semi-final. The upcoming tournament is going to be the last edition of the Champions Trophy, which makes the great off-spinner think that winning the illustrious tournament will be very special.

“This time we want to win it. That is what we are dreaming,” said the world-class off-spinner. “Last time we lost the semi-final in South Africa against New Zealand at Centurion. The last four ICC events we have got through to the semi-final. This time with the ICC Champions Trophy coming, we want to win it. That is what we are dreaming.”

The cricketer from Faisalabad further revealed that he started playing cricket after Pakistan’s great victory in the ICC Cricket World Cup 1992 under the inspirational leadership of Imran Khan.

Being a part of the squad that lifted the ICC World T20 2009 in England was also a special moment of the off-spinner’s career.

“Pakistan won the World Cup in 1992 and that was the time I was starting to play cricket, so I have very good memories of 1992. It was very memorable when we won the tournament in 2009 and that was very exciting for me and the team,” he added.
