2013 German Open: Anand Pawar stuns Viktor Axelsen to secure a pre quarter-final berth
Thursday, February 28th, 2013 2:21:25 by Ammad KhawajaIndia’s talented shuttler Anand Pawar amazed everyone with a staggering knock in the second round of Yonex German Open and paved his path to pre quarter-final round on February 27, 2013.
He was up against Viktor Axelsen of Denmark and their meeting prolonged to 35 minutes before ending with final figures of 21-11 and 22-20.
The Indian campaigner mounted pressure by winning first set on merit and then capitalised this psychological edge to seal a splendid straight-set victory.
On the other hand, Viktor remained at the lower end in most part of tussle and crashed out of this tournament in a disgraceful manner.
The battle heated up when Anand Pawar launched brisk attack and ruled the court in establishing rallies of first set.
He did not give his higher ranked rival enough time to read his strategy and gained a decent advantage in no time.
Anand kept on moving forward at steady pace and left his challenger far behind on the points table. At the mid-game break, he was in commanding position with a significant margin.
After the one-minute interval, the Indian shuttler injected more intensity in his attack and wrapped this segment of showdown with an impressive total of 21-11.
However, it was not an easy road to victory for him in the following game as the Danish campaigner put great resistance.
This time Viktor improvised his game plan and confounded Anand in first half of the set. He prevailed in couple of consecutive rallies and piled up a favourable score.
The game kept on swinging between both contenders until the final moment and this nerve-racking tussle ended when Anand Pawar registered a tight yet decisive total of 22-20.
Now the Indian player will lock horns with Hsueh Hsuan Yi in pre quarter-final round of German Open.
