Speculations are mounting regarding veteran starter pitcher Javier Vazquez as he might not be able play in the 2013 Major League Baseball season for the Washington Nationals.
According to a recent report in which Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo told some media personals that the Puerto Rican national is still recovering from late January surgery on the meniscus in his right knee.
Mike Rizzo was the one who scouted Javier Vazquez in winter. He went to Puerto Rico and saw Vazquez playing in his country’s league.
“He looked great, in very good shape,” Rizzo told the local El Nuevo Dia newspaper during Wednesday’s game.
Recently Alex Cora, who is general manager of Criollos de Caguas, a baseball team in the Puerto Rican Professional Baseball League and where Vazquez was playing when Nationals GM scouted him, said for 14-year Major League veteran.
“If he wants to pitch, he wants to pitch in the big leagues,” said Criollos de Caguas General Manager Alex Cora in a phone interview from Puerto Rico.
Cora added, “He’s been great, Right now, he’s the Javy Vazquez who pitched well in the second half of the 2011 season. … Physically, he’s in the best shape of his life. It’s funny, he was here in the summer and he was playing tennis and I helped him play. He started doing CrossFit … His command is still there but his stuff is better now.”
He further said, “To be honest, I think he’s feeling the itch [of the majors], I think the decision is far from being taken. The decision is going to involve his family.”
Earlier when the Nationals scouted Vazquez for this year’s majors, experts called this development quite healthy. However, now with his prolonged injury, the Nationals still need to wait for his potential arrival.
Vazquez has a great career ERA of 4.22 along with tremendous 165-160 win loss and 2536 total strikeouts. He is highly experienced and has played so far for several Major League teams in his illustrious career.
Starting his professional baseball career from the Montreal Expos, Vazquez went on to play for some of the top MLB franchises including New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago White Sox, Atlanta Braves and Florida Marlins.
