PM orders withdrawal of recent hike in petroleum prices
Saturday, March 2nd, 2013 2:05:17 by Tahir KhanTaking notice of the recent hike in petroleum prices, Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf has ordered withdrawal of the recent increase in petroleum prices with immediate effect, the PM office said Saturday.
The Prime Minister issued these instructions during a meeting with Minister for Finance Mr Saleem H. Mandviwala in the Prime Minister’s House.
During the meeting, the Finance Minister briefed the Prime Minister about the overall economic situation in the country and the compulsions and rationale for increase in the recent petroleum prices.
The Prime Minister, however, directed the Finance Minister to immediately withdraw the recent increase in petroleum prices as it was adversely affecting the lives of the common people.
The Prime Minister said that the democratic government will not tolerate any additional burden on the people and will ensure to provide relief and succor to the common man.
The Prime Minister emphasized that his government accords highest priority to the welfare of the people and will pursue policies to facilitate them.
“The Peoples Government will not impose any additional burden on the common man and will do its utmost to alleviate the sufferings of the people”, said the Prime Minister.
The price of petrol was increased by Rs3.53 per litre (3.42 per cent) to Rs106.60, that of high speed diesel by Rs4.35 (3.99 per cent) to Rs113.56, kerosene by Rs3.75 (3.76 per cent) to Rs103.69 and light diesel by Rs3.93 (4.2 per cent) to Rs98.25.
The opposition parties Friday protested against the hike in petroleum prices and staged walked out of the National Assembly.
PML-N and MQM MPs chanted slogans against the increase in petrol and other petroleum products and had demanded its withdrawal.
The people had also angrily reacted to the increase and the media had described the decision as a bomb by the government when it has only two weeks to pack.
