Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal displayed dismal defensive skills in the opening half which cause them 1-2 loss against their arch rivals Tottenham Hotspurs at the White Hart Lane. As a result, Andre Villas-Boas side took seven point lead and jumped to the third spot at the Barclays English Premier League on Sunday.
The Spurs took full advantage of two moments of worse defending by Arsenal in the last ten minutes of the opening half. Gareth Bale scored the opener with an assist by Sigurdsson in the 37th minute. As a result, Bale fired his 10th goal in eight games. Two minutes after this, Parker played a ball in and produced a similar goal which Aaron Lennon netted in.
In the second half, Arsenal re-ignited their spark and played aggressively and better. With a spectacular Walcott’s delivery, Per Mertesacker headed the ball in and lowered the trail. The Red Army sought many chances after that but failed to utilize, eventually suffering a 1-2 loss.
The Frenchman, Wenger, commented in a post match press conference:
“It’s frustrating because we put so much effort it and we lost the game when we were on top of the game. If you watch the game again you will see that at the moment we were 2-0 down we should have been 2-0 up. They had a very difficult start, we were on top of the game, and the 2-0 lead of course gave them the confidence to defend well and that’s what they did for the rest of the game.”
Next up for Arsenal are Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League on 13th March. They are currently trailing 1-3 and will now take on last year’s runner-up at their home ground.
