Supreme Court takes notice of deadly Karachi attack
Monday, March 4th, 2013 8:55:59 by Tahir KhanThe Supreme Court on Monday took suo moto notice of the deadly bomb attack in Karachi and observed that the State and the Provincial Government has failed to protect life and property of citizens.
The bomb attack on Sunday killed over 40 and injured nearly 150, mostly Shiite Muslims.
Taking notice of the attack, the Chief Justice of Pakistan, summoned the top provincial lawyer and provincial police officers to file comprehensive report by March 6.
The Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr. Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry described the bomb attack as ‘shocking carnage’ and observed that being a major disaster, causing 45 deaths and 150 wounded with enormous, loss and destruction to property, is a serious violation of fundamental rights, guaranteed under the Constitution.
The bomb attack that ripped through a Shia-majority neighborhood Abbas Town killed and injured several women and children, the Chief Justice said.
He also referred to the media reports that after the explosion, the members of the Shia-community took to the streets against the law enforcement agencies and the Government, demanding arrest of the killers.
The top judge referred to the media reports that the law enforcement agencies and other government officials did not reach the venue of the blast in time for the rescue operation, due to their presence in a private function as they were busy there to provide security/protocol to higher-ups.
The note further intimated that soon in the aftermath of the Karachi attack and following the pattern of two consecutive bomb blasts in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan, this equally shocking carnage should serve as an eye-opener. He and an appropriate order after hearing to all concerned is required to be passed.
