Spanish icon Rafael Nadal, world number one Novak Djokovic and the Latvian qualifier Ernests Gulbis also stole the show at their respective tournaments last weekend.
The former world number one, Nadal dethrones his top seeded compatriot, David Ferrer, with a bagel at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel. This was his 38th clay court title and his second after returning from seven-month layoff since injuring from last year’s second round clash at the Wimbledon Championships.
“This was a great week for me and today I played exceptionally well, I dominated the game against the world No. 4 and couldn’t be happier, especially when I think where I am coming from,” said the Spanish star. “Perhaps the conditions were in my favour but I feel it was maybe one of the best matches of my career.”
Seeded top at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, Djokovic showed flawless skills to outclass the world number six, Tomas Berdych, in straight sets. This was his fourth Dubai crown.
“My serving today was great, [I had a] very high percentage of first serves, over 200 [kilometres per hour]. I really felt that I could rely on my serve. And in tough moments, that part of my game actually helped me to prevail.”
Ranked 109th in the Emirates ATP World Tour Rankings, Gulbis showed his best tennis skills to grab his third career title at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships 2013 on Sunday.
“I’m really happy. I worked hard,” said the beaming Gulbis. “These last nine days were tough. I had a match almost every day, except one day when it rained, so I’m exhausted now. It’s my favourite tournament. It’s the only tournament in the world I am winning.”
The Latvian warded off early resilience to overpower Edouard Roger-Vasselin with a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory in one hour and 36 minutes.
