Power worth Rs 90507.339m stolen in five years: Senate informed

The electricity worth Rs 90507.339 million has been wasted/stolen during the last five years, Minister for Water and Power Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar told Senate on Friday.

In a written reply to the question of Begum Najma Hameed, he said the units stolen or wasted in last five years were 13626.558 Mkwh.
 

Giving reasons he said Minister of State for Water and Power Tasneem Qureshi said poor economic condition of the consumers, continuous increase in tariff, levy of fuel price, open conductor, poor law and order situation, Kunda system and meter tempering are contributing in the electricity theft.
 

He said the line losses have been decreased from 21.3 percent to 20.5 percent in last five years.
 

Mohsin Leghari wondered that 65 percent losses of PESCO and no action has so far been taken by the authorities. He said the duration of load shedding should be increased in power theft areas.
 

A total of 74 persons had been punished by various power distribution companies during the last two years, Minister for Water and Power Chaudhary Ahmed Mukhtar told Senate.
 

In a written reply to the question of Begum Najma Hameed, he said Faisalabad Power Supply Company (FESCO) and Gujranwala Electric Supply Company (GEPCO) had punished seven people each for stealing electricity by tempering cables and meters.
 

Similarly MEPCO had punished 13 people for electricity theft and three electricity thieves were punished by Islamabad Electricity Supply Company (IESCO) during 2011-12.
In 2012-13, 15 electricity were punished by GEPCO, 12 were punished by FESCO, 5 people were punished IESCO and two were punished by Sukkur Electric Supply company (SEPCO) from Jan 2012 to date.
