Chicago White Sox and starting pitcher Chris Sale have agreed on a mutual understanding on a five-year(with two options years) extension deal worth $32.5 million.
“A pitcher, regardless of his mechanics, there is a risk involved and a concern of potential breakdown,” White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said. “We are confident in Chris’ durability and obviously very optimistic about his future.”
Hahn added, “Frankly, what this deal came down to was dealing with two risks, Going year to year, which would lead to the potential downside of him walking out of the door in four years. Then there is the other risk of doing a multiyear deal that has the downside of potential injury and us being out a few bucks.”
The 23-year old starter played a wonderful 2012 Major League Baseball season and impressed the White Sox management to extend his contract.
“I just try not to concentrate on any of the external things going on,” Sale said. “It is just like leaving your wife and family home sick and you try not to bring that to the field with you. So I will just go about my business, and everything will kind of work itself out.”
He added Friday after signing the deal with the White Sox, “That’s the biggest part, trying to stay myself, stay the course, I don’t feel like I need to try to do anything different than I have in the past and I don’t think I will. (Teammates) are going to keep me in check and staying down the road I need to stay on.”
Later his teammate Jake Peavy said for Sale, “Obviously, he is going to be our guy and the ace of this staff, as we call him, This stuff is so neat. What I love about being here is this is the closest I’ve ever been to any group of guys. We hang out together off the field, we go to dinner together, our families hang out together. When you have that kind of friendship, you’re able to take some pressure off each other.”
Sale went 3.05 ERA in the last Major League outing while he remained consistent with his 17-8 win-loss. He struck out total 192 batters and achieved 1.14 WHIP.
Overall his career numbers also very persistent at 2.89 ERA along with 21-11 win-loss, 303 strikeouts and 1.12 WHIP. Seeing his last season’s stats along with career numbers, experts agreed that the White Sox management made a good decision by extending his contract.
