Unidentified gunmen shot dead a senior official of the election commission in Quetta on Tuesday, police said.

Ziaullah Qasmi, Deputy Election Commissioner, came under attack in Quetta on Chandni road when he was heading home from office in a rickshaw.

He was shifted to hospital in critical condition where he died of wounds, doctors said. He had received eight bullets.

Two gunmen, riding a motorcycle, fled after the incident.

No group claimed responsibility and the police they are investigating behind the incident.

The incident comes at a time when the election officials are busy in preparations for parliamentary polls, scheduled for May.

Rumormongers take advantage of the violence to create doubts about the upcoming elections. The leadership however says that terror attacks cannot derail the process.

Quetta has been in the grip of deadly attacks and target killings in recent months. The federal government had imposed Governor Rule in Balochistan in January after a bomb attack on Shia Hazaras in Quetta left around 90 people dead.

Earlier, the Balochistan election commissioner had submitted a report to the Election Commission of Pakistan outlining security concerns in the province ahead of the elections.

The provincial election commissioner had suggested increased security in sensitive areas during polls.
